Exploring Nespresso’s Global Headquarters: A Journey Into Sustainability and Innovation
The AUS community recently had the opportunity to visit the Nespresso Global Headquarters in Vevey, Switzerland located near the American Institute of Applied Sciences in Switzerland (AUS). When we stepped into the building of this iconic company, we weren’t just visiting another corporate office — we were witnessing the future of global sustainable business in action.
Our hosts Pierre Jacquot, Global ESG Business Engagement & Recycling Manager, and Camille Galtier ESG Global Strategic Planning & Community Manager guided us through Nespresso’s comprehensive sustainability framework, known as "The Positive Cup." This strategy exemplifies how modern businesses can integrate sustainability into every aspect of their operations that starts on the coffee farms and extends all the way to the consumer’s cup.

Enhanced Learning Experience for Future Leaders on Sustainability

Our visit provided a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about the importance of sustainability in global business. Nespresso’s focus on decarbonization, regenerative agriculture, and the circular economy offered invaluable real-world lessons and a better understanding of how concepts they learn in the classroom across several courses, such as supply chain management, marketing, and social corporate responsibility are applied at Nespresso.

One of the most discussed aspects was the AAA Sustainable Quality Program, which underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable coffee farming. By working closely with over 150,000 farmers worldwide, Nespresso has complex training programs that empower farmers with the knowledge and tools to cultivate high-quality coffee while minimizing their environmental impact. By ensuring fair prices and providing technical assistance, Nespresso has been a pioneer in helping farmers achieve financial stability and improve their communities. It was inspiring to hear about Nespresso’s unwavering commitment to paying 98% of its coffee suppliers at or above the New York Stock Exchange price.

Another major highlight was learning about Nespresso’s aluminum capsules. These capsules are key to preserving the quality and taste of their coffee and are also a central element of the company’s sustainability strategy. Currently, 75% of Nespresso capsules in Europe and 33% globally are recycled, and the company is working tirelessly to increase these figures. With significant investments in improving recycling infrastructure, Nespresso collaborates with governments, local organizations, and consumers to maximize recycling efforts. The consumer participation is seen as essential in making recycling a success and the company and we learned about creative initiatives to give a second life to recycled capsules and coffee grounds.
B Corp Certification: A Recognition of Excellence
In 2022, Nespresso achieved B Corp certification, a significant milestone that recognizes the company’s commitment to social and environmental responsibility. This certification underscores Nespresso’s dedication to creating a positive impact on people and the planet. This certification is due for renewal in 2025 aiming for a very ambitious impact score bigger than 90.
By embracing sustainability at every step of the coffee journey, Nespresso is setting a new standard for the industry, establishing this company as a place where its employees are proud to work and make an impact.
Looking Ahead
As students left the headquarters, they gained not just knowledge about sustainable business practices, but inspiration for their future careers. Nespresso’s example shows that profitability and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive — they’re increasingly interdependent in today’s business world.
The company’s integrated approach to sustainability, from supporting coffee farmers to innovating in recycling technology, provides a blueprint for how future business leaders can drive positive change while building successful enterprises. For students preparing to enter the business world, understanding these practices isn’t just about environmental consciousness — it’s about mastering the future of business itself.
