Switzerland as an all-year destination: the Swiss Riviera in summer rivals ski resorts

When travellers think of Switzerland, snow-capped peaks and ski resorts often come to mind. Yet Switzerland is as much a summer destination as it is a winter destination. At the end of August, the Swiss Riviera – stretching along Lake Geneva from Lausanne to Montreux – remains vibrant, with its mild microclimate, golden vineyards, and lakeside life. The long evenings, warm waters, and cultural events make this period one of the most rewarding times to visit.

Alluring attractions along the Swiss Riviera

  • A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Lavaux terraces between Montreux and Lausanne offer sweeping lake views and wine tastings. Visitors can sample crisp Chasselas wines while walking among the vines.
  • The lakeshore is perfect for late-summer strolls, crowned by the iconic statue of Queen’s legendary frontman.
  • Swiss Museum of Games (La Tour-de-Peilz):
Set in a castle by the lake, the museum displays over 10’000 games from across centuries – a hidden gem for families and curious travellers.
  • With more than 2’500 miles of marked trails, Vaud invites visitors to hike, cycle, climb, or explore tree-top rope parks well into autumn.

End-of-summer events in Swiss Romande

  • Murten Classics (10–31 August):
An open-air classical music festival that combines historic charm with world-class performances.
  • Lucerne Festival (mid-August to mid-September):
One of the most prestigious classical music events in Europe, just a train ride away.
  • Tellspiele in Interlaken:
A traditional open-air performance of William Tell, running into early September.
  • Montreux Riviera water sports:
Kayaking, paddle boarding, pedalos, wakeboarding, and water-skiing remain popular late into the season.
  • NOX ORAE in La Tour-de-Peilz (28–30 August):
A unique mix of concerts and cinema by the lake, creating unforgettable summer nights.
  • Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Vevey (28 August – 5 September):
A prestigious competition drawing some of the world’s best young pianists.

Experiences still going strong around the end of August

  • From Lausanne, Montreux, or Vevey, visitors can take scenic cruises across Lake Geneva, many routes passing the Lavaux vineyards.
  • A WTA 125 women’s tennis tournament that brings international talent to the Riviera.

Lausanne highlights:

  • Art exhibitions at Plateforme 10 and Fondation de l’Hermitage
  • A climb to Sauvabelin Tower for panoramic views
  • A swim at Pully-Plage or Ouchy’s lakeside spots
  • A stroll through the medieval old town, guided by the traditional nightwatcher

Why Switzerland is an all-year destination

The end of August and early September bring a slower pace, lighter crowds, and golden evening light over the vineyards – proof that Switzerland is not just about snowy winters. The Swiss Riviera shows that the country is as much a summer destination as a winter one, offering lakeside culture, vineyard walks, and vibrant festivals when the ski slopes rest. Whether basking in the late-summer sun or carving through alpine snow, Switzerland shines as a true all-year destination.
